Local Authority and other public sector stock were reported by local authorities in the Local Authority Housing Statistics and include non-permanent dwellings. Some authorities have indicated that the data reported for other public sector stock may be based on partial information and so reductions in these data items may reflect lower data quality rather than real changes. Private Registered Provider refers to registered providers of social housing (previously known as Housing Associations or Registered Social Landlords). These figures include all self-contained units and bedspaces, as at 31 March each year, as collected in the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) Statistical Data Return. Shared ownership dwellings are currenly included in owner-occupied dwellings. Total stock figures use the census 2011 as a baseline, with information on subsequent changes to the dwelling stock collected annually as at 31 March through the Housing Flows Reconciliation form and 'joint returns' from the Greater London Authority. Private stock is calculated by the residual. Figures for the total dwelling stock and private sector are estimates and are therefore expressed to the nearest ten dwellings at district level and thousand dwellings at the England level because they should not be considered as acurate to the nearest dwelling. Figures for 2018 are provisional.

Dwelling Stock Estimates

Annual
2001
Estimates of the number of dwellings in Wales by tenure and for each local authority, as at 31 March each year. Estimates of the total dwelling stock are calculated based on data from the population censuses. The estimates are produced by using the dwelling count from the most recent 2011 census as a baseline. This count is then projected forward using information collected on annual changes to the dwelling stock through new build completions plus any gains or losses through conversions and demolitions. The tenure split for Wales between owner-occupied and privately rented dwellings has been calculated using information from the Annual Population Survey (APS). Full details of the methodology are in the statistical release. 2013 is the first year with complete data for local authority housing.

In line with the Rates Order (NI) 1977, Housing Stock is defined as a count of properties which are valued as domestic or mixed for the purposes of rating. This refers to properties in the Valuation List which are used (or when next in use, will be used) for the purposes of a private dwelling. This includes properties which are temporary incapable of beneficial occupation, but excludes Caravans, Domestic Garages, Domestic Stores and Car Parking Spaces.
